Diabetes/Symptoms of Diabetes
Diabetes is widespread in the United States, affecting 20.8 million people. Type 1 diabetes is caused by the body’s failure to produce insulin to control blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes, which is far more common, is caused by the body’s failure to use insulin properly. Both types of diabetes can be complicated by heart, eye and kidney disease as well as nerve damage. Traditionally, type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin. Conventional treatment of type 2 diabetes may include medication, insulin and an attempt to minimize disease in other organ systems, but does not address the cause of disease.
Our Approach
At EcoLogical Internal Medicine, we work with you to restore blood sugar balance and minimize the complications associated with diabetes. Although type 1 diabetics need insulin, elimination of food allergies, diet education and vitamins/nutritional supplementation can in many cases decrease the amount of insulin required and lessen the complications associated with diabetes.
For type 2 diabetes, we work with you to help your body use insulin properly and decrease diabetic complications. We help you optimize your diet and eliminate food allergies for blood sugar control. Vitamins and nutritional supplements are used to balance blood sugar and prevent or address complications of diabetes. We also help you develop an exercise program, which improves weight loss and improves blood sugar balance.
