Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) is a serious disease with complications such as hip fracture, which has a 50% mortality rate in the first year. The mainstay of conventional treatment is bisphosphonate drug therapy, which can have serious side effects.
Our Approach
At EcoLogical Internal Medicine, we understand that vitamins and minerals play a significant role in bone health, as does optimal absorption of these nutrients. Suboptimal digestion and absorption can prevent these nutrients from reaching their destination. We work with you to optimize your diet to support bone health and use vitamins and nutritional supplements that are tailored to your nutrient needs. We also address food allergies, which can cause inflammation and malabsorption in the digestive system. When necessary, we may use intravenous nutrients to bypass intestinal absorption and maximize nutrient delivery for bone health.
Bioidentical hormones are another means of stabilizing bone loss. Hormones including estrogen, progesterone and DHEA have been shown to be beneficial in osteoporosis. We also work with you to develop an exercise program, which is critical in building and strengthening bone.
